The Forum Question
Do you have new techniques that are helping you to get business in the recovering economy?
- Michael North is working with Volker Frank and others on collaborative consulting to solve business problems rather than providing answers.
- Judy Baker has started collaborating with Kathleen Rhodes of 3 Geeks Media in addition to marketing herself on her own: bundled services are more attractive. She’s acting as the point of contact for clients, to get them reliable contractors in other areas.
- Yael Schy gets a lot of business by speaking at conferences and professional gatherings.
- Janet Crawford is reaching out to clients and being very specific in my ask: “Who do you know that meets the following criteria? Here’s what I would like you reach out and to say to them.” She’s also prospecting among the people who fund the clients she normally works for.
- Mike Van Horn says that every bit of new business he’s had has come from the tried and true: referrals, returning clients, people who buy the book, speaking. His social media efforts haven’t brought him anything.
- Maynard Brusman got a speaking gig based on a blog post he wrote that got picked up by the media. He’s also been approached by a CEO who wants to work with him and found him through LinkedIn. Visibility makes a big difference.
- Sallie Goetsch gets business by answering questions and participating in group discussions on LinkedIn. (More visibility.)
